NHS PAY RATES
2001
SUMMARY
The National Health Service is by far and away the biggest employer
of nurses in the UK. Private sector pay rates therefore tend to
be set close to the NHS norm. This holds true for private hospitals,
private nursing homes and for most nursing agencies too. The important
NHS pay figures for most comparison purposes with the private
sector can be summarised as follows.

By convention, we have divided the annual NHS nursing salaries
shown above by 52 to arrive at weekly earnings, and we have divided
weekly earnings by 37.5 to arrive at hourly rates of pay. 30%
added for night work and Saturdays, and 60% for Sundays. Enhanced
rates for specialists with extra experience and/or qualifications
in A&E, ITU etc., and for 'in-charge' responsibilities. London
weighting and allowances are worth another 15% or so on top.
You would expect extra payments on top of the hourly rates above,
for sheer inconvenience and for being prepared to turn out for
work at the last moment, if you're working on an agency basis,
and another 10% on top again to cover you for holidays and time
off sick.
